Food and Agricultural Organization

Committee Introduction

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is not only dedicated to the elimination of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, but also commits to reducing poverty and driving economic and social progress through global efforts toward productive and sustainable agricultural and food systems. This allows delegates to familiarize themselves with the workings of the international food system, while also providing substantial insights into how transnational trade may impact a country’s economic and social status. Whether you are interested in food and health, passionate about economic and social development, or simply want to learn more about an organization whose goal is to make sure all people have regular access to high-quality food – a vital component to our survival, FAO is the committee for you.

Topic Introduction

Biotechnology and Sustainable Agriculture

Do you ever wonder where the food on your plate comes from? What was involved in the production process of the foods that we know and love; the foods that feed all of us? Furthermore, what does the current agricultural situation say about the future of food provisions? Among the many factors involved, the role of biotechnology in today’s agricultural sector is one that cannot be overlooked. Biotechnology, including the technology to genetically modify organisms, has reinvented the field of transnational food trade and domestic farming. Though its use has benefited both developed and developing countries, controversies and growing dependency on biotechnology from developed countries and transnational corporations has unforeseen ramifications on producers and consumers alike. Delegates are expected to discuss possible methods of cooperation to ease the gap between the North-South divide, regulate biotechnological advancements, and strike a balance between economic growth and social equality towards sustainable agriculture.

Chair

Hello dear delegates and welcome to HSMUN 2016!

My name is Jin-Lin Yang, and I am currently majoring in International Business at the National Taiwan University. It is my honour to be serving as the chair of FAO at this year’s conference. Having spent most of my life living and traveling abroad (the most recent being my time spent in Ottawa, Canada), I have not only been able to immerse myself in vastly different cultures, but the experience has also piqued my interest in the workings of the United Nations as an organization which promotes international cooperation in order to resolve global issues. Thus, I joined the MUN community as soon as I had the chance to do so, and have remained as both a delegate and a chair ever since. My experience in MUN thus far has largely been positive, and I hope to be able to share it with you. Looking forward to great times with all of you outstanding delegates this July!

Assistant Chairs

Dear MUNers, I am Albert Hsu, majoring in international business in NTU. In 2014 when I was in NTHU, I participated in Harvard World MUN, in which I enjoyed my most unforgettable MUN experience. In the process of cooperating with students from all over the world, I've gained a huge impact. Afterwards, with the purpose of spreading global visions and helping young students establish global visions, I founded THMUN, which is the first MUN camp in NTHU. I am passionate about international issues and it would be great to share it with high school students of the next generation. Looking forward to seeing you this summer!

Hi everyone. My name is Denise, currently a sophomore majoring in Department of  Information and Finance Management in Taipei Tech. I have started mun career in my sophomore year which makes me feel obsessed with the cooperation, negotiation, the process of forming draft resolution ,and the final consensus reached with distinguished delegates in the conference. Also, I am honored being chosen to represent one of the delegates in World Mun this year from NTUMUN. Without making up my mind to join the great MUN conference, I can’t imagine myself to be capable of delivering my country stance in a diplomatic and confident way. MUN can fulfill all your expectations of meeting all outstanding people with same interest to bring professional visions on tackling the international affairs unless you

take the first step out of your comfort zone.

Look forward to meet all remarkable delegates in FAO committee.
