United Nations Enviromental Programme

Committee Introduction

High up into the sky, deep down into the sea, and even every breath we take in has something to do with the environment. Nevertheless, environmental issues have become one of the top concerns not only for global citizens nowadays, but also for generations to come. Fortunately, we are not facing these problems alone. United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) serves as the leading authority that guides global discussions on environmental-related topics and manages durable solutions on them. In HSMUN 2016, delegates are not required to have specific background in environmental science, but rather a keen heart in related issues. Through participation in this committee, delegates will actively engage in discussions and cooperate with one another to produce feasible solutions on the selected topic, and hopefully putting some newly gained insights throughout the process to good use after their participation of the conference.

Topic Introduction

Overfishing

Have you ever imagined that, some day in the future, there will be nothing topping the rice of sushi, or chips lying alone without fish on the plate? Although the metaphor might seem to be over-exaggerating, the escalating severity of overfishing has increased its possibility. However, the negative influences of this issue are not limited to the extinction of fishery resources or the industry itself, but also individuals, since fish is an important source of protein. Use of disruptive fishing practices, excessive by-catches, and inappropriate subsidies are all possible root causes of the overexploitation of fishery resources. Delegates will be examining the various implications of overfishing and work together to develop concrete solutions aiming at restoring balance between the consumption and restoration of fishery resources.

Chair

Hello delegates, my name is Jeff, and I am currently a sophomore in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of National Taiwan University. I started my career as a MUNer in my freshmen year. At first, I was extremely shy and did not really know how to prepare myself as a knowledgeable and active delegate. However, after participating in several conferences, I have gradually accumulated many skills needed and even become friends with so many like-minded and kind-hearted people. Stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself with MUN was difficult, but the changes it has brought to me definitely worth the efforts. What about you? Are you ready for a journey full of exciting adventures? Hope to see you soon in HSMUN 2016.

Assistant Chairs

Hi hi dear delegates, I’m Vera Liu, currently a freshman in Taipei Tech Department of English. My MUN career started during high school with HSMUN 2013. And I love it from the moment it started. MUN has a profound influence on me, whether it's enhancing my critical thinking skills, improving my speaking abilities, or most importantly, igniting my passion to know more about the world. Through MUN conferences, I’ve met some truly wonderful and amazing people and made valuable memories that I know for sure would never fade. I believe that this conference will also be an unforgettable memory for me; I hope it will be the same for you too. See you soon!

I’m Jacklynn Chung, majoring in economics in National Taiwan University. Analyzing, critical think-ing and a society-caring heart are all important not only in economics but also dealing with daily issues, which initially makes me interested in participating in MUN. As a young person highly paying attention to the world around me and would like to utilize my leadership, there is no denying that I am also fascina-ted by the cooperation and competitions among all delegates. After joining NTUMUN, I have been plunging myself into tons of international affairs and deep discussions which are much more than I did before and ,in this, every MUN conference for me is not only a meaningful experience but a source of sense of accomplishment. Solving social problems with scientific methods logically is what economics is all about and I hope to strike out resolutions using the same mode and practice to make a better world.
