General Assembly Plenary

Committee Introduction

The General Assembly is the representative organ of the United Nations, where all member states participate to decide the general direction of the future international cooperation. With the great number of states present in the conference, delegates will have to advocate their stances regarding the interests of the country they represent and to lead the debate. Delegates are expected to try to reach out the consensus among countries by organizing different opinions, delivering persuasive speech, and making compromise that is acceptable to the main concern of your country.

Topic Introduction

United Nations Security Council Reform

The United Nations Security Council is one of the main organs in the international society to maintain the international peace and security. The council has settled many international disputes and conflicts since the creation of United Nations.

However, there has been numerous international crisis that the council failed to solve. The ineffectiveness and failures of the council can be attributed to several perspectives. The overuse of veto power and the inequitable representatives of the member have been the main discussion on international society. Though many reforms regarding the member of the council have been done, the results were still unacceptable due to the disagreement between permanent members and non-permanent members. Additionally, the decision making process and the council's actions are limited by the lack of council's power and the international order. As the conflicts and disputes have been aggregated recent year, a feasible and acceptable reform, that the General Assembly Plenary should take the responsibility on, become more urgent. We expect the delegates to address the topic practically by taking the current international situations into account, and the discussion can be comprehensive enough that different aspects are included. We encourage delegates not only come to know the past changes of the council ,but also come up with new measure to improve the council.

Chair

My name is Sophia Yi, and I am now a sophomore majoring in political science at the division of international relations at NTU. I am also the officer in the department of academic in NTUMUN. I was in the delegation team of NTUMUN in 2015 to participate NMUN in New York. Also,I am going to Singapore for exchanging student next semester. I had my very first MUN conference when I was a freshman, and I have fallen in love with it ever since. To me, MUN is the place where I get work with people from different backgrounds, improve skills of debating and negotiating, and look at the world from different points of view. I cannot wait to learn about this world, meet incredible people, and explore new places--and MUN gives me the chance. I am really honored to be the chair for General Assembly Plenary and the Head of Academic of HSMUN this year, and it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the committee! I believe you will gain invaluable experience and have unforgettable fun in HSMUN 2016. Again, I sincerely hope you will enjoy the amazing MUN experience as I do.

Assistant Chairs

Hello fellow MUNers!

My name is Vincent Chang, and it is my pleasure to co-chairing for the GA Plenary of HSMUN 2016. I am currently a freshman in National Yang Ming University as a med student. I have had various MUN experiences, including PAMUN 2015, PANAMUN, and others. I have traveled across the globe during the short 19 years of my life, living in countries such as Mexico, Panama, Spain and many more. This gave me opportunities to experience different cultures and meet many people. Naturally, speech and expression were very important in my life. Traveling constantly also gave me a great interest in international affairs, and expanded my worldview. MUN is a platform where I am given the opportunity to showcase these interests of mine, and hopefully I can pass down this passion to other people and give them an amazing MUN this year.

Hello to all the MUNers!

I am the co-chair of this year’s GA Plenary, my name is Steven, and I am from Kaohsiung! I am the freshman in NTU, majoring in the department of Foreign Languages and Literature. The 2015 PAMUN and this year’s NMUN (New York MUN) are my two important MUN experiences. During my high school career, I had attended series of English Speech Contest, and did won the championship in YMCA Speech Contests consecutively for three years. Public speaking is one of my favorites. Also, I had participated in lots of international projects during the past three years, representing my school to participate in WYM in Japan, ITEX in Malaysia and BIS in England. Having attended many international programs, I have cultivated a deep interest in knowing new countries and meeting new friends, and thus went on a trip last year as a backpacker in Europe for 25 days. Hopefully, my passion in English and interest in knowing more international issues would bring you a great MUN experience this summer!
